The charismatic Professor Hubert van der Spuy has always prioritised and cherished the optimal development of young musicians. As a widely respected music educator, he established the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition in 1989 as chairperson of the SASMT Tygerberg Branch.
Over more than three decades, the Tygerberg Branch has grown this instrumental competition into one of the most prestigious of its kind in South Africa and Namibia, providing a unique platform for exceptionally talented young musicians aged 13 years and younger to compete alongside their peers from across the nation.
Now in its 37th year, the competition continues to be a highlight on the musical calendar, celebrating remarkable young talent and inspiring future generations of performers and educators. Several past winners have gone on to pursue music at tertiary level, building distinguished careers as acclaimed performers, teachers, and leaders in the music world. Some have even returned as esteemed members of the adjudication panel.
